Freehold Township vs Freehold Borough: Key Differences

January 25, 2024 by Melissa DeSantis Leave a Comment

If you are considering moving to Freehold, New Jersey, you might have encountered two distinct areas: Freehold Township vs Freehold Borough. Despite sharing the same name, they are separate municipalities with unique characteristics. Deciding where to live can be daunting, but understanding the differences between these two areas can help you make an informed decision. In this blog post, we’ll look at the key differences between Freehold Township and Freehold Borough so you can choose the best option.

Freehold Township is situated in the western part of Monmouth County and covers approximately 38 square miles. The area blends residential, commercial, and open spaces, offering a suburban atmosphere and easy access to major highways. Freehold Township offers a more suburban way of life, with larger properties that provide more space and privacy. Thanks to its excellent schools and medical facilities, this makes it a popular choice for families. Freehold Township is the place to be if you are looking for a quiet, spacious community for your family.

In contrast, Freehold Borough is smaller, around 1.9 square miles, and has a distinctive downtown area. It’s often called the “hole in the donut” due to its location within the township. Freehold Borough boasts a unique downtown atmosphere, rich history, including the Monmouth County Courthouse, and diverse dining and entertainment options. It’s a great place to live if you want an urban lifestyle with easy access to amenities.

Freehold Borough and Freehold Township High Schools are part of the Freehold Regional High School District. However, each has a unique school progression. Freehold Borough students attend the Freehold Learning Center, a specialized program that helps students transition into high school. In contrast, Freehold Township High School has a more traditional school progression, with students attending their designated schools based on their address. So, if you are particular about your child’s school progression, it’s essential to research more into the school districts of each area.

Another key difference between Freehold Township and Freehold Borough is the cost of living. Freehold Township generally has a higher cost of living due to the larger properties and suburban lifestyle. In contrast, Freehold Borough has a more diverse range of housing options, catering to different budgets. It’s important to consider your budget and lifestyle preferences before deciding which area to choose.

Choosing between Freehold Township vs Freehold Borough can be challenging, but understanding what each area offers is essential. Freehold Township is the place to be if you want a suburban lifestyle with larger properties, excellent schools, and medical facilities. At the same time, Freehold Borough offers a more urban lifestyle with diverse dining and entertainment options. Understanding your lifestyle preference, budget, and school progression preference, among other factors, will help you make an informed decision. Either way, both areas have unique characteristics that are worth exploring. Who knows, you might end up loving both areas and having difficulty deciding which one to choose!
