The Borough is 1.9 square miles. Freehold Borough is filled with many historical attractions dating back to the Revolutionary War era. Beautiful Victorian style homes sit on shady tree-lined streets. In 1824, the American Hotel opened on West Main St., where it still stands today, as does the Freehold Racetrack which opened in 1853. Downtown Freehold offers wonderful restaurants and is frequently the site for outdoor concerts, events, parades and a summertime farmers’ market. The town is known for its sense of community and diversity.
Bruce Springsteen grew up in Freehold Boro. He lived in 3 different homes within the Boro and has stated that Freehold Boro played a vital role in his inspiration for writing.
The New York Times has referred to Freehold Boro as “a hole in the doughnut” because it is surrounded by the Township of the same name.
